Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas from me to you... here is an excerpt from our christmas letter and our card :)

I pray this update finds you rejoicing and resting in the Savior this Christmas season. As Christmas day draws near I cannot help but marvel at God and His plan to save His people. As I sit and hold my 6 week old son I cannot fathom the depth of the Father’s love for us as He sent His son, Jesus, in the form of an infant to save people from their sins. My reading lately has been from I Corinthians, the Bible says that God uses the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, what is weak in the world to shame the strong, and what is low and despised to bring to nothing what the world considers important. He does these things so that no man may boast. The fact that God sent salvation in the form of a newborn baby can only do one thing, that is exalt His holy name.  I pray this season as you consider the birth of Christ it causes you to do that very thing, lift high the name of God in your life and share that message with those around you!

Rejoice as you worship the risen King!!

Judah's Birth Story

Finally got around to writing this up...

Judah’s birth story really probably should start the weekend prior to his arrival. Saturday November 6th mom and dad came to visit and brought all the nursery furniture and the cradle where he would be sleeping. We got the furniture in, and the kids room arranged.

Sunday November 7th was the day of Judah’s baby shower at the church. I had friends and family in town and our amazing congregation blessed our family with an abundance of gifts and new things for baby Judah. It had been a busy two days and I was feeling every bit of 36.5 weeks pregnant.

On Monday, we finished painting the dresser I had been working on and I sorted through everything from the shower and decided what needed to be returned due to it being a duplicate or too small (because he was going to be a 9 lb baby at full term). After all my sorting we made a trip to Joplin to return things, run some errands and to pick out his coming home outfit. We let Kyla pick it out. After debating over several outfits she decided on a white sleeper with brown puppy dogs along with a bib.

Tuesday was a serious day of nesting. After a trip to the library for story time I came home and got busy. I sorted through and sized Judah’s close. Pulled out and washed up the few newborn things and the 0-3 months stuff. I also washed an put away all the towels, burp cloths, receiving blankets and other baby things. I put new hardware on the now finished dresser and put shelf paper in the drawers. I put away all of Kyla and Judah’s clothes. I also confess to rearranging furniture in our bedroom. By the end of the day I was tired!!

Wednesday rolled around and that is the day for our afterschool program. Still feeling good I did my usual role there, PE teacher . On this day I had the kids do various relay races. These relay races included duck walks, bear crawls and crab walks and of course I had to demonstrate a few times that if I could duck walk at ALMOST 37 weeks pregnant these elementary students could do it too!!

It was once I slowed down Wednesday I felt a gush of fluid that was different from what I had ever felt. I kept an eye on it and got off my feet. Later that evening the same thing happened again. Judah was very active in my belly and I knew I would be off my feet all night so I opted to call the doctor in the morning to change my appointment from Friday to Thursday (the next day).

Thursday, November 11th , 37 weeks pregnant I called and got in to see my doctor. Kyla really wanted to go and hear brother’s heart beat so we all packed up and headed to the doctor’s office. After listening to the heartbeat Kyla and Justin headed back out to the waiting room while the doctor checked to see if my water was broke. After checking me she was unsure if my water had broken, if it had she felt like it was a high leak. She brought in an ultrasound machine and checked the fluid around the baby. The fluid around Judah was measuring low. Judah was measuring over 7lbs and I was 3cm dilated and having contractions just not regular. My doctor sent my directly to the hospital to start the induction process. After a few tears, (hey, I was hormonal and pregnant and not prepared… I had yet to pack my hospital bag among other things) we headed over to the hospital. On our way to the hospital we called my mom and got the ball rolling, she was on her way, she called GG (my grandma) to come watch Kyla and dad was going to head up later. While I was sitting in admissions getting checked in I made out a detailed list to send with Justin so he could pack the hospital bag.

After admissions we headed directly to labor and delivery. After getting settled in the room and answering many questions I was hooked up to an IV drip of antibiotics because I was GBS +, that was approximately 1:15 pm. Kyla and I shared a lunch of turkey sandwhich and fruit and then her and daddy left to meet GG and pack the bag. I was left to rest and wait a few hours until they started the pitocin. At 6:15 pm the pitocin drip was started and the contractions began. Here is where I have to pause and give huge PROPS to my nurses. The main nurse that was there the whole time was amazing. Her and I talked about my labor and delivery before they started the pitocin and she really helped me to have the labor I desired (which was as natural as can be). We bumped the pitocin every 20 minutes until my contractions were close enough and long enough to get the job done. She continually checked on my pain and encouraged me all the while. At 8:45 pm the doctor broke my bulging bag of water and was dilated to 4cm. The contractions were still bearable and I felt really good about how things were going. I spent some time on the birthing ball and it was amazing. I know that sounds silly but it was the best position for me to labor in at that time. I was able to lean over onto the bed and rest between contractions. I was checked again at 9:20 pm and I was at 6cm. Somewhere between 9:30-10:00 pm sitting wasn’t working so I stood for a few contractions. Needing another change I laid in the bed for a few contractions and was checked again and at 10:00 pm I was 7-8cm. Going through transition was rough, it was hard, I mean the hardest thing I have ever done. I opted for some staydol in my iv drip to take the edge off. It was wonderful, it allowed me to rest between contractions. At 10:15 I was feeling immense pressure and was at 9cm. The doctor was called in and I was squatting at the end of the bed trying to get to 10 cm. The doctor suggested laying on my back and pushing though a contraction. One contraction later I was at 10cm. I pushed through a few more contractions, (I am not very good at pushing!!) with a room full of cheerleaders. By this time the whole nursing staff was preparing for his arrival and cheering me on. Judah arrived at 10:48 pm weighing 7lbs 11oz and 20 inches long. Pushing him out was the absolute best feeling after all that pain!! It was an amazing moment! He was immediately placed on my belly, he looks a lot more like me where Kyla looked like daddy. Justin was by my side the whole time supporting me and rooting me on.

It was an awesome birth experience, painful… yes. Worth it, yes! The recovery compared to Kyla’s was quicker and I felt better immediately. I am incredibly thankful to my doctor and the hospital nursing staff for managing my experience so well.

Christmas Countdown

I cannot believe are so close to Christmas! As I am sitting here cuddling my sweet baby boy I wanted to share with you a few fun and simple ways to start getting yourself and your kiddos to think about celebrating Jesus' birth this christmas season.

Last year we made a simple paper chain and had numbers on them, each day we read verses corresponding to the number. I got the verses from here. I actually ordered the tract so this year we will use it with stickers :) we will also use our homeschool calender with Jesus' birthday marked on it as a count down.

Here are two fun preschool resources I have come across that we will enjoy doing...

Happy Thanksgiving

Football is on the television, the family is conversing around me, and round one of turkey consumption is complete and not only is my stomach satisfied but so is my soul. Today I am resting in the faithfulness and goodness of the Lord Jesus Christ. Over the past few days I have been thinking about the abundant blessings the Lord has given me. The blessings in this life are a bonus to the salvation that God has granted me. He took me, a sinner separated from Him, and made me a co-heir with Christ. One of His children. This is called grace and it has been set upon me, for that I am thankful.

I am thankful for my husband, who seeks to honor the Lord with His life. There is much I can say about my husband, who is my best friend and who I would not want to walk through this life without.

I am blessed by my TWO children, one who is here a few weeks early. Children are a blessing and I am thankful for the two the Lord entrusted to me. It can seem overwhelming at times but I know this is what God has called me to and He will equip me!

My parents and Justin's parents are a blessing to my life, I would not be who I am today without their influence on my life. Seeing them with my children is amazing, as I type this my dad aka PAPA is in the floor playing Kyla's version of Chutes and Ladders with her. :)

I have countless blessings of Godly friends, an awesome church family, and an overabundance of other blessings.

For all these things I am grateful!
Happy Thanksgiving!

Kyla's Birthstory

The closer I get to Judah's due date the more I start thinking of labor and delivery and especially the first go around with Kyla. I decided I wanted to copy and paste this from another site so I always have a copy of it!

Kyla Jane’s Birth Story

We had our 40 week doctor appointment scheduled for Thursday. We had a growth ultrasound and an appointment. At the ultrasound the tech told us she was 9.5 with a pound either way because of all the fluid. My doctor gave me two choices: 1) elective c-section or 2) induction. I decided to go for the induction because if their was a problem then we could go c-section if necessary.

I had originally planned to try and go all natural (meaning no pain meds, no epidural). I knew with an induction it would be very difficult to do but I wanted to still try. I have a friend who is a doula (birthing attendant) and she was going to be present at the labor and delivery.

The induction was scheduled for Friday, May 11th. I was suppose to call at 5:00 am to see if they had a bed available. They told me to come in at 7:00 am. So that’s what we did. We got there at 7:00 am and got checked in and got things rolling. At 8:00 am they got me started on the penicillin (I was GBS +) and pitocin. When I got there I was still 3 cm dilated. At 1:45 pm the doctor came in and checked me, I was a 4, she also broke my water! Which I hated, not because it was painful but it was just gross to me! Within 15 minutes my contractions were on top of each other and very painful. I labored without any pain relief until 3:30 pm. I didn't think that I could keep going if I didn’t get relief. I was afraid pushing would be out of the question and I was afraid that it would all end in a c-section. I got the epidural and it was really nice. In the 2 hours I went from 4 to 6 cm dilated. After I got the epidural I rested and relaxed and talked to mom, dad, Justin, and Allison (doula). It was nice. I went from a 6 to 8 from 3:30-6:00. I was starting to get uncomfortable and was wondering what was going on. At 9:00 I was checked and was 10 cm and at a +3 station. It was time to push. We kicked dad out of the room and started getting down to business.

Pushing was nice because it was a way to relieve pressure. Justin had one leg (he did incredible by the way) and Allison had the other leg and mom was there for support! I pushed for awhile and she was stuck under my pubic bone and she was not turned the right way. It took a really long time to get her past that bone. It wasn’t painful (still had the epidural but it was wearing off) but hard work. She finally got past the bone and started making her descent. Everyone was telling me they could see her head and I didn’t believe them. So finally they got me a mirror so I could see what was going on. Sure enough I could see her head! Anyways.. I pushed for 2 hours and my beautiful 9 lbs 2 oz baby was born into this world. She was 21 ¼ inches long and born at 11:38 pm. The placed her on my belly and Justin cut the cord. She was purple and not crying but making noise and such. They took her over to the warmer and started getting to work. She scored an 8/9 on her apgars (counted off for color). Before they took her I said to Justin, She looks like you! After they finished sewing me up (had a 2nd degree tear) I got to hold her and it was awesome!! She was wide awake for a few hours. We started nursing within the hour and she did a good job! At about 1:30 we made it to our room and the rest is history!

Catching up...

I cannot believe it has been so long since I blogged! Life is catching up with me. This is my first laid back day in weeks with nothing to do in the morning or prepare for in the evening so I have laid on the couch, cuddled with my girl and rested. I think it was just what I needed. To rest, physically, emotionally and spiritually. I am thankful the Lord can give rest of all those things.

It is hard to believe but we have been in SW MO for a year now at our church. A chill in the air will always remind me of when we moved here and started ministering to and with the people here. The Lord has taught me a lot in the year we have been here but the most important lesson is that He is fighting our battles and we must wait on the Lord. That goes from ministry to family life. There hasn't been one instance but many where I have sat back and watched God move and it has been awesome to see how HE is working!

We have been to OKC twice in the past few weeks. One of my best friends (really she is a sister from another mother) had her first child and I HAD to go get some sweet cuddles in, and newborn photos :) isn't she a doll.

Preschool happens when there is time, we are reading and playing lots and ya know, I am okay with that! I am enjoying my time with Miss K before baby Judah gets here. Speaking of I am 32 weeks pregnant and really looking forward to him getting here in his time :)

I have been reading Disciplines of a Godly Woman by Barbara Hughes and have thoroughly enjoyed reading that book. She frames ever discipline in the framework of submission. I have enjoyed refocusing my attention to God's intended order in the church and home and seeking to glorify the Lord in that order.

That is what is going on here, don't be surprised if it is another few weeks before you hear from me again!

What's Going On | Preschool

You know what even the best laid plans fail :) but such is life. I can say since we started preschool a few weeks ago life has been insanely busy or I have been so wiped out that sitting at the table doing something formal hasn't been my top priority. BUT what I will say is I am still being intentional with Kyla. I thought I would share with you things we are doing to encourage you to just live intentionally during what may be a busy season in your life.

  • Books, we read lots and lots of books!
  • I have a few special "school" type things that she has easy access to any time she wants. I will often turn off the TV and music on and generally that is where she goes first! (Right now in her boxes she has pom pom balls/colored cups for sorting and counting, lacing cards, tangram puzzle & her geoboard)
  • Puzzles, this girl LOVES puzzles.
  • The Letter Factory Video
  • When we are at a restaurant waiting for food we use the creamer, butter, sugar packets, sweeter packets, anything really to count, do patterns, matching, same and different. You get the idea :)
  • We have stopped and looked at and talked about buffalo on the side of the road.
  • Coloring
  • Playing on her magnetic doodle board
  • Lots of playing, and her imagination SOARS!
We have fit in a few days of organized school, which has included a few workbook activities, tracing, drawing lines (pre writing stuff), working on the letter A and what it says, the days of the week, Bible and Catechism Questions and Scripture Memory. Counting and sorting with her bears and some cutting for fine motor skills!

Hope school is going well for all of you as you continue to plug right along!

Weekly Wrap - Up

Week one of Preschool is over but the big news this week was Miss K's first haircut!! She did such a good job! We took her to the same place we get our haircut at and I knew she would let Mrs. Sarah cut it without any problems. I told her if she sat real still she could chew a piece of gum while she got her haircut. That is exactly what she did! We trimmed a little off and shaped it up. Here is the before picture and the during, I still need to get a good after photo.

Such a big girl!!

Preschool went well, it is very laid back but she is enjoying doing "school" for a little bit every couple of days. I am slowly adding new things but for now we are being intentional at doing something everyday!

Have a great weekend!

Preschool | Day 1

First I have to be a mommy an minute and say... "HOW DID SHE GET SO BIG!" and "I CANNOT BELIEVE WE STARTED PRESCHOOL!" okay now that I got that out of the way I can get on with our day!

As I have mentioned in the past (here and here) we are starting school because she loves learning and is showing interest. It is very laid back! I told her yesterday that we were going to start today and she was very excited, her excitement rolled into today and our first day was great!

I of course took her outside for some photos, and I wanted a new blog header.

We started with prayer and our calendar wall and moved the star to the date, talked about the days of the week and the weather. (I do have things to add to this still, shapes and a few other things)
Next was Bible time. I have chosen to go through The Big Picture Story Bible. We are going to read the same   story all week long. This morning we talked about creation and that God used words to create the world and that His creation was good. We also reviewed our Catechism Questions and Scripture memory.
Following Bible time I did some basic assessment tests. I used the Assessment tools I found on the 1+1+1=1 Blog (under the learn more section). I had a really good idea of things we needed to work on and this was helpful to confirm those areas. The assessment included her identifying capital letters, lowercase letters, numbers 1-10, shapes and colors, tracing horizontal and vertical lines, cutting straight lines, counting 1:1 when touching an object, and ABABAB pattern recognition.

She capped out the morning helping daddy make eggs, in case you are wondering she was supervised!

We also read some books and have had plenty of free play and daddy time today (since today is his day off)! While I was at the store Daddy threw in some computer time. Rest time/tv time has been spent watching Peter Rabbit and The Letter Factory.

I pray her desire and love to read and learn continues as the Lord continues to shape and fashion her heart into His!

Happy Monday!

Catching Up!

Things around here have been slightly busy since my last post, so really this is just going to be a catch up post!

Last week my grandmother was here and she helped me TREMENDOUSLY! We got semi-organized (come on, are you ever REALLY organized??) in the kids room and my closet. I have a trunk full of clothes to attempt to consign or just donate. It is nice to lighten my load!! We sorted through toys and separated big girl toys from baby toys. Moved some furniture around. Put my bed on risers for more under the bed storage. Made a bed skirt, and started a few baby gifts that I need to finish.

This week we started with a doctors appointment on Monday. Judah is measuring big (no surprise), my glucose test is coming up, and I have an appointment in 3 weeks then we are down to every two weeks! I cannot believe that. After our appointment we traveled to Sedalia, MO to visit hubby's brother. I did some photography for him. It was a nice little get away for a few days. Since we came back on Wednesday we have hit the ground running with life and ministry.

I am currently reading in Galatians and also The Disciplines of A Godly Woman. Plus a smattering of other things here and there.

I am hoping to start some preschool next week or the first full week of September. I  might go ahead and start next week with a few things. I am thinking I will start with the Preschool Assessment Tools that I found here. I have a good idea of what we need to work on but this will help me get started.

Well because really pictures are way more fun than just words here are a few I will leave you with!

Gratituesday | So blessed!

When I read that today was Gradituesday at Heavenly Homemakers I knew I wanted to stop and take some time and reflect on how thankful I am for the way God blesses me!

Way #1 in which I am grateful... blessed by God.
I was reading Colossians 2 yesterday and was blessed by verses 13-14.
"you who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross."

I love the picture of God canceling our debt by nailing it on the cross! I was humbled and thankful by the work of Jesus on my behalf!

Way #2 in which I am grateful... blessed by used furniture.
Ever since we got married I have wanted and armoire so we can hide the TV when it is not in use. We just celebrated 6 years in May and I feel blessed to have the things we do have and how God has provided those things. I came across a used armoire that was in great shape and in our price range.  With my husbands approval we are now proud owners of a new to us armoire.

Way #3 in which I am grateful... blessed by family.
My husband... he trusts in me. There are times (like a new tv stand) that we don't need something new but I feel like it can better serve our family and he trusts my judgement and encourages me to better our family for the purpose of Godliness.

My mother... after a rough attempt at staining by me and my husband my mom came to save the day. Seriously, she spent her first Saturday after school started (she is an administrator at a school) in 105+ degree heat sanding and painting with me to finish the armoire. Her service, sacrifice, kindness, and love to me and my family amazes me and is one example of God's grace in my life.

My grandmother... maybe it is nesting about 15 weeks early but I am in an organizing mood. My grandma is spending a few days with us helping me get organized and watching Miss K for me so I can get some work done. Not only is she blessing me with her time and service she blessed us to a new TV. She humbly asked if she could bless us with that, just because!

Justin and I got to talking about all the "brand new" things (like big furniture) have been given to use by our family and friends!

God has been so good to us and it has been great to reflect on that this Gratituesday!

Are you grateful for what God has done in your life?
Join us for Gratituesday at Heavenly Homemakers!

Homemaking | Weekly Schedule & Meal Planning

When we first got married I was such a good little wife, I cooked often, even prepared things ahead of time... then life happened! I will admit most days I fly by the seat of my pants... what does that mean for our family? That means we often eat out and not very well. I realize this is often due to lack of self-discipline on my part which also means I am not being a good steward of the things God has given me. The Lord has been showing me lately this is a huge area that I need to repent of and trust Him in!

So I will confess to you internet... I don't like to cook very often but the thought of nutritious, home-cooked meals is appealing... so I am going to give it a go! Just creating a menu and grocery list is going to be a huge help! A few things I am going to do are start cooking my meat in advance, in bulk fashion, and then dividing and refreezing. I know this will save me much time and dishes on down the road. Also fixing things I can freeze in advance, like muffins or other snack or lunch type foods.

I will admit, I am excited about the possibility of saving money and  serving my family in this way!!
I will keep you posted on my kitchen mishaps and hopefully successes.

I also want to share with you my simple weekly schedule and weekly menu documents that I made up to help me get started on my quest to be organized in my kitchen!

Everyday Minerals | Makeup Review

I have always loved mineral makeup (Bare Minerals) but would go through seasons where it just didn't work for me, it wouldn't last all day due to my oily/acne prone skin. So I would switch to Mary Kay, Almay, Neutrogena, & other over the counter products. I would go back to Bare Mineral's often but would end up disappointed.

Justin and I have recently being switching to using more natural alternatives for things we put on our body (those posts coming soon) and I switched back to mineral make up. Back in the fall I ordered my first order of Everyday Minerals after reading about them from a few websites.

Things I love about mineral makeup in general:
- the weightless feel when it is on
- the even coverage
- the fact that it conceals well (pimples and under eye circles)
- the color match
- a little goes a long time (it lasts awhile)

Things I love about Everyday Minerals:
- all the above
- they have different type of coverage, I use the intensive and it LASTS ALL DAY!!!
- It is more cost effective than the above mentioned product
- they let you try it free (you pay shipping) or when you order you can get $5.00 samples for free
- you get emails with great savings if you want more stuff

The one thing I don't love is that color matching is hard. But I tried all the samples close to my color range (they have lasted me FOREVER) and went from there :)

If you have never used mineral makeup you do need a few certain tools, a concealer brush, a kabuki brush/or foundation brush, and and another brush to brush on the finishing powder. There is a slight learning curve but I am sure there are many internet tutorials out there.

Because I think a picture tells more than words I am going to show you a before and after of me. I used a concealer, intensive base, & finishing powder mixed with lucent powder to give me a shimmer :)

don't judge - self portraits are hard and I look goofy - I am really putting myself out there
(the yellow is just from the terrible lighting :) )

This  makeup really evens out my splotch red skin tone and covers my blemishes well. This photo was taken right after I put it one, once I have had it on awhile it really does look better :)

If you are looking for new makeup I highly recommend Everyday Minerals!

Here's the plan | Preschool @ Home

I have had a little more time to think and plan and things are beginning to come together. We are not starting here until September and will probably go through November. Baby #2 is due in early December so we will take December and January off and maybe February.

Here is my lesson plan book & a few of my resources:

The only "formal" curriculum I will be using will be Handwriting Without Tears PreK Book. After reading various reviews and speaking with people I felt like it would be a good fit for me and Kyla. I am looking for her to show a few more signs of readiness before we begin but I think she will really enjoy it once we get started.

I am also going to be using Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. It was given to me and I have heard great things about it too, we we are going to give it a shot!

Above and beyond that there will be weekly trips to the library for story time and to check out books and play on the computer. Puzzles will be put together and games will be played. You can see my post of manipulatives here. These will be things we will be using daily. Thrown in with small unit studies (i.e. milk comes from cows, let's go to a dairy and see cows being milked. She thinks milk comes from the grocery store :) ). I also have plenty of the cheap work books to work on counting, cutting, coloring, dot to dot... you get the picture.

Since Kyla is still young my hope is that her and I can get into a schedule of sorts and begin to take steps toward more intentional school in the next 2-3 years. This is what my lesson plan book looks like, it has 8 squares to go with my toddler/preschool schedule.  I plan to schedule at least 3 days a week.

There are two things that will happen daily, Bible & Calendar time. I am still working on my calendar wall, it will include the day of the week and the weather. During that time daily we will review catechism questions from the A Catechism for Boys and Girls (you can download it free here or here) (here is another great resource, Truth & Grace Memory Books) and review scripture memory. We will also read for a story Bible (The Big Picture Bible, Read Aloud Bible Stories, My ABC Bible Verse, The Jesus Storybook Bible, or Leading Little Ones to God).

In a nutshell, that is how preschool will look for us! Thanks for looking!

Are you weary?

I don't know about you but I think being a parent is the hardest job in the world! I am sure you would agree, there is no responsibility like molding a child's heart. As a Christian parent I must continually and consistently correct, rebuke, reprove and train my child (and myself) in righteousness. Ya know what, that is TIRING!

I find great comfort in Galatians 6:9

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

If you need some encouragement as you press on, check out this post on the Girltalk blog

For God's glory and my daughter's heart, I will not become weary!

Preschool @ Home

I have been looking forward to writing a series of posts on what we are doing at home for weeks but we have been swamped here with life!! Even though things have been busy I have been getting ready for "school" let me assure you I use that word lightly considering my kiddo is barely 3, but she is eager and ready to learn and enjoys activities and other such things. My biggest goal with "school" is to get us on some type of schedule for doing life together. Right now we fly by the seat of our pants, hopefully come September we will have a routine of sorts.

Everything I have been told is to relax and have fun, so that is what we plan to do. I plan on lots of trips to the library, books being read, games being played and life being lived. My goal is to be intentional with life, for example Kyla now knows the stop sign is an octagon, now we are working on the fact that the octagon has eight sides :)

Enough rambling, what I am wanting to share with you today is what we are using for manipulatives and how it can be done on the cheap!

The above photo is our school area, it has three plastic clip boxes I bought from Dollar General for $3.00 a piece, I will put 3 different activities every few days for Kyla to do.  Currently there is a peg board (which she got as a gift), wooden beads and cord (hobby lobby for cheap), homemade geoboard (all I had to buy was thumbtacks, I got the wood/paint from my parents), and the Melissa & Doug Pattern Blocks and Boards (which I got for 12.99 from TJ Maxx with Birthday Money, regular retail is $14.99).

Although we are not ready for school (or should I say I am not) she has LOVED and spent HOURS playing with these four various activities.

Here is the rest of our manipulatives:

I spent the most on the counting/sorting bears and the pattern cards, but she had b-day money so we bought them ($30.00 for both), there are multi-sized pom-poms for counting and sorting, foam dice (9 pack for I think 2.99 from Mardels), homemade lacing cards from a pack of foam ($4.99 for lots of foam from Hobby Lobby and cord I bought to use for the lacing cards and wooden beads - $1.99), Pipe cleaners, beans to spray paint later to use for counting, letter & number cookie cutters (I already had). Some things you don't see that we will use is homemade play dough and colored cheerios or fruit loops.

I made the geoboard from this post ours is 8x8 size, Kyla loves it!!

Here is a shot of our school area, that will be changing to a family bulletin board that will include scripture memory, who we are praying for, catechism questions, and probably a mission statement. I think the colors and shapes will be moved around and a calendar and maybe something else will be added. She knows letters and numbers but I think it still will be helpful for awhile.

If you have any thoughts, suggestions or what works for your preschooler I would love to hear it!!

Happy Schooling!

Reading

As of late I have been enjoying reading again! The busyness of the summer and life has kept me from reading like I want to but nonetheless I am attempting to plod through a few books. I updated my currently reading and have read lists at the bottom. I mixed a few fiction books into the mix back in May. I finished Gospel Powered Parenting last week and it was one of the best reads on parenting I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge to keep the gospel in the center of my parenting. It has caused me to think deeper and harder about the gospel and how it intersects with my life and Kyla's life at every moment. How does the cross speak to her unkindness, what does the gospel say to me about my laziness. One of my top parenting picks, hands down! One side-note: it is written and geared toward fathers as spiritual leaders but we moms have something to glean out of it as well.

A friend loaned me The Joy of the Word Filled Family a few weeks ago and I have enjoyed reading a chapter or so a day (it is a pretty thick book and could be intimidating). It has encouraged and exhorted me to be Godly and Word filled so that my family too may be filled with God's word! I am also reading How People Change to become better equipped so that I can grow in godliness and point others toward that path also! I will keep you posted on how they both end up!

A few on my next up list are:
(we are going to be taking a few couples through pre-marital counseling with this book)

Grace's BBQ Meatloaf

I am not a very good "cooker" (cooker is what Kyla calls me). I don't mind cooking I hate the mess it creates! I am also not a very elaborate person by nature so if  a recipe has more that 10-12 ingredients (or things I cannot pronounce for that matter) or more than a few steps I am out! However Grace over at The Mommy on The Bus Says... posted this recipe a few months ago and we have had it many time since and honestly I love it! It is in my oven now and my tummy is growling as I share this with you. (need I add I do not like meatloaf, usually) :)

Hope these few ingredients, simple steps and yummy meal bless your family too :)

The Gospel for Real Life IV

The Gospel For Real Life
Ransomed! - Chapter Seven
The Bible teaches that Christ shed His blood and gave His life as a ransom to redeem us from the curse of the law. To understand what it means to be ransomed we must understand the word redeem. “Redeem is to buy back or secure the release of someone from slavery or from captivity by the payment of a ransom.” Thus ransom is the price paid to redeem someone from captivity. All who trust in Christ are set free from their condemnation and the curse of the law because Jesus paid the ransom (70).
We are under the curse of the law because we cannot possibly keep the law. We need to remember that the law is not to curse us but to lead us to Christ (Gal 3:24). Christ became a curse for us, as our substitute. “God established the curse for breaking the law and it is God who ordained the remedy for the curse. Jesus bore the curse in our place and paid our ransom price (74).”
We are ransomed to receive the blessings of redemption. “By redeeming us from the curse of the Law, Jesus opened the way for us to inherit the blessing of obedience to it, blessings that He earned for us by His own perfect obedience. These blessings will reach their ultimate fulfillment at the resurrection” (76-77). Not only are we no longer under the curse but we are also redeemed from the bondage of sin (78). Since we have been ransomed we should continually seek to put to death, by the spirit, the sins we are in bondage to.
Reconciliation – Chapter Eight
Reconciliation by definition, assumes a previous state of alienation and hostility caused by the offensive actions of one or both parties (84).” In our case it is our sin that has separated us from God and has caused us to be God's enemies. It is through the death of Jesus Christ that God reconciles us to Himself (84-85).
The good news of reconciliation is that it is permanent and eternal. Because Christ accomplished our reconciliation we will always be accepted by God (87).
Right Standing With God – Chapter Nine
The most important question we all face is: How can a sinful man or woman come into a right relationship with an infinitely holy and just God? The only way we can have a right relationship with Him is to be perfectly righteous – as He is righteous (92).” We know it is impossible for us to be perfectly righteous, so how do we attain a right relationship with God?
God requires perfect righteousness, He also provides it for us through Jesus Christ (93). The work of Christ that declares us righteous is called justification. We are declared righteous based on the real accomplished righteousness of Christ, imputed to us because of our union with Him (94).
This justification comes about by faith. We are united to Christ by faith and His work is applied to us by faith. Exercising faith involves renouncing any trust in our own good works and relying on the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ (97-98). “We come to Christ empty-handed claiming no merit of our own, but clinging by faith to His blood and righteousness, we are justified (98).” This right standing with God is based on the work of Jesus Christ today, tomorrow and throughout all eternity.
Paul's Great Exchange – Chapter Ten
Paul exchanged his social status and religious credentials for the righteousness that comes from God through faith in Jesus Christ. He sought to rid himself of His good works because He found something more valuable, that is the righteousness of Jesus Christ. He exchanged his own righteousness for that of Jesus Christ.
What this means for us is that we should do the same. We need to throw our own good works overboard and look to Christ as a means of our salvation and our way of maintaining favor with God. We must remember that God's favor rests upon us not on the basis of our works, but on the basis of the infinite merit of Jesus Christ (112). Good works are not a means to ear God's favor. “The more a person counts as loss his own righteousness and lays hold by faith of the righteousness of Christ, the more he will be motivated to live and work for Christ (113).”

Happy 4th!

She is three!

I didn't set out for these to be her 3 year old pictures... but there is a few I just adore!

Three has been wonderful but so challenging, she is attempting to spread her wings and retest her boundaries. Independence is a great thing when earned and exercised respectfully. I am reminded that this is a season and an opportunity to point her to the cross when she cannot obey and to remind her that she needs God's help to obey and follow mommy and daddy. We often ask her if was she is doing is pleasing to God, when the answer is no we remind her she cannot please God without Jesus' help. We also let her know that mommy and daddy can't please God without His help either and we often need to ask God for help. I rest totally in the fact that God is working the Gospel in her life and I rejoice to see the lightbulbs click :)
